NE Bend man jailed in girlfriend’s shooting

A man who called police to his northeast Bend home early Saturday said his girlfriend was shot by a handgun she found on the porch after someone knocked on the door. But by the end of the day, he was in jail, and police said they had determined she was wounded in a struggle over the gun.

Anthony Joseph Pastran, 44, called 911 shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday to his home at 1187 NE Ross Road on a reported burglary in progress, said Sgt. Nick Parker.

Pastran told officers someone had knocked on his door and his girlfriend, Lisa Ann Schnittke, 39, had gone to answer it, Parker said. He told police she’d found a gun on the front porch and was shot in the leg by the gun.

Parker said officers found Schnittke had injuries to her upper legs that were consistent with being shot with a .22 caliber handgun that was recovered at the scene. She was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend with non-life-threatening injuries and released later Saturday, Parker said, adding that Pastran was unhurt.

An investigation involving interviews, a search warrant served at the home and medical findings led police to determine there had been no one trying to break into the home, Parker said.

Instead, he said, the evidence showed that the gun had been in the home, and Schnittke was shot during a struggle over it. The bullet went through Schnittke’s left thigh, then lodged in her right thigh, Parker said.

Pastran was arrested and booked into the Deschutes County Jail Saturday night on charges of third-degree assault, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, recklessly endangering another person and methamphetamine possession, Parker said. He remained held Sunday on $18,500 bail.
