Madras woman hurt in car-pedestrian crash

A Madras woman crossing a downtown street in an unmarked crosswalk was struck by a car and seriously injured Wednesday evening, police said Thursday.

Around 5:20 p.m., police were dispatched to the report of a vehicle-vs.-pedestrian accident at the corner of H and Fourth Street (southbound Hwy. 97/26), said Assistant Chief Tanner Stanfill.

An investigation, assisted by Oregon State Police, determined that Lucille Wright. 25, was walking westbound on H Street, crossing Fourth Street in the unmarked crosswalk, when she was hit by a 1997 Toyota Camry driven by Robert William, 80, also of Madras, who was driving south on Fourth Street, Stanfill said.

William stopped his car after the collision and called 911 to report the accident, Stanfill said.

Jefferson County EMS took Wright to St. Charles-Madras and she later was taken to St. Charles-Bend, Stanfill said. As of midday Thursday, she was listed in serious but stable condition, the assistant chief added.

No citations have been issued, Stanfill said, but the investigation continues.

He said one lane of the highway was blocked for a time by the crash and investigation. ODOT, Oregon State Police and Jefferson County Fire assisted at the scene.
