Bend man arrested in homeless camp stabbing

A 29-year-old Bend man was arrested Monday night on assault and other charges after a 39-year-old man was stabbed at a northeast Bend transient camp, police said.

Police responded around 7:23 p.m. to the reported stabbing in the area of NE Fourth Street and Xerxes Avenue, said Sgt. Ron Taylor.

Officers arrived to find Lauren Graham, 39, with a “severe but non-life-threatening” cut to his left forearm, Taylor said. He also had a puncture wound on the right side of his abdomen from an apparent dog bite.

An investigation found that Jacob Calhoun, 29, got into an argument with several people at a transient camp, Taylor said.

At one point, Calhoun “turned his attention towards Graham,” Taylor said in a news release. Calhoun reportedly produced a knife or similar weapon and stabbed Graham in the arm, Taylor said. It also was reported that Calhoun ordered his dog, an American Pit Bull, to attack Graham during the altercation.

Bend Fire Department paramedics took Graham to St. Charles-Bend for treatment of his injuries.

Calhoun was lodged in the Deschutes County Jail on two counts of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Calhoun’s dog was taken to the Humane Society of Central Oregon for a required quarantine period.
