Arrest made in NE Bend stabbing
A 21-year-old Bend man was arrested Monday evening in the stabbing of his cousin, who police said tried to intervene in a fight at a northeast Bend apartment.
Officers responded around 5:23 p.m. to Apt. 20 at the Juniper Terrace Apartments at 130 NE Sixth St. on a reported stabbing, said Sgt. Dan Ritchie.
Officers contacted Matthew David Sartain, victim Amanda Penner, 20, also of Bend, and another man outside the apartment, Ritchie said.
Penner had suffered a stab wound to her chest that appeared to be non-life-threatening, and she was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend for treatment. A nursing supervisor said she was treated and released later Monday night.
Ritchie said Penner had attempted to intervene in a physical confrontation between Sartain and another man in the apartment.
Minutes after police arrived, Sartain was taken into custody without incident, the sergeant said, adding that a knife was seized at the scene.
The apartment complex is located across the street from Bend High School, but Ritchie said the incident did not interfere with after-school activities, as the suspect was quickly arrested.
Sartain was booked into the Deschutes County Jail on charges of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He was held on $55,000 bail.
