Redmond man to be sentenced in attack on ex-wife
An April 2 sentencing date was set in court Friday for a Redmond man arrested last July on charges he broke into his ex-wife’s home in Bend, then raped her at knifepoint and threatened to kill her.
Jody Gene Brooks, 52, entered into a plea agreement on March 12, pleading guilty to four of the charges against him: two counts of first-degree rape and one count each of burglary and unlawful use of a weapon, prosecutors said.
His original indicted charges also included attempted murder, three counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count of attempted kidnapping, as well as sex abuse, sodomy, menacing, coercion, fourth-degree assault and strangulation.
Police and prosecutors said Brooks had concocted a plot to kill his ex-wife on her birthday. They said he stole the key to her northeast Bend apartment from their adult daughter and broke in in the middle of the night.
After he assaulted her with a knife to her throat, she managed to get away and get to a neighbor’s home.
Brooks apparently then cut himself and was found “bleeding out” by police, court documents said. The woman later got a restraining order against Brooks, who had no prior criminal history.
