Redmond parking lot crash victim mourned
Redmond police on Thursday identified an 86-year-old Terrebonne man struck and killed by another Terrebonne man in the Redmond Walmart parking lot Wednesday afternoon.
Police Lt. Nathan Garibay identified the victim, after family notification, as Michael Dale Lysne, 86, of Terrebonne. On Wednesday night, he identified the driver as Darrell Muzingo, 68, also of Terrebonne.
The investigation is continuing, Garibay said, and no more information was being released.
Lysne’s death shocked and saddened seniors who gather regularly at the Redmond Senior Center, where members said the frequent visitor will be missed and remembered — especially for his love of dancing.
“We admired him very much,” said Fern Young, president of the senior center, who recalled he asked to dance with 90-year-old ladies, “and that was really great.”
“If you said no, you couldn’t — he couldn’t understand why you wouldn’t dance,” another senior center regular said. “He kept asking.”
Walmart responded to a request for comment Thursday with a statement: “Our hearts go out to the family during this time. We offer support during this time of need.”
Garibay said officers and fire medics were called to the Walmart Supercenter parking lot around 1:08 p.m. Wednesday. Lysne was found dead at the scene, he said, while Muzingo was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Redmond for evaluation.
A large portion of the parking lot was closed off for several hours due to the investigation and recovery of evidence.
With the crash an “open investigation,” limited details are being released, Garibay said.
Bend police and Oregon State Police crash investigators assisted in crash reconstruction work, while Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies provided technical assistance, he said.
Officers and detectives spoke with numerous witnesses, but anyone with information related to the crash was asked to contact Redmond police at (541) 504-3400 or the county’s non-emergency dispatch at (541) 693-6911.
Customers talked on NewsChannel 21’s Facebook page about a frantic, even horrifying scene, with shoppers running inside to tell others what had happened.
Earlier, Garibay said police were investigating “a number of different possibilities” as to what happened.
Officers were reviewing security video from the area to help corroborate what witnesses were telling them.
Scanner traffic and witnesses reported a man was believed to be pinned beneath a vehicle, but police would not confirm it.
