Update: Bend man in police chase avoided drug raid

An attempted traffic stop early Friday in northeast Bend turned into a high-speed chase and arrest, with the help of a Bend K-9 that bit the fleeing suspect — who was not home a few hours earlier when his home was raided by drug agents, officers said.

Shortly after midnight, an officer saw a driver committing several traffic violations while heading south on Boyd Acres Road, said Sgt. Todd Fletcher.

The officer tried to stop the car near the corner of Boyd Acres and NE Town Drive, but the driver, later identified as Shaun Michael McCurdy, 42, refused to pull over, Fletcher said.

He continued southbound on Boyd Acres, past Empire Avenue and Brinson Boulevard, going about 80 mph, Flecher said. The car turned east on Ross Road and continued to Lotno Drive, turning south onto Lotno, then west onto Noe Street – which is a dead-end street.

At the dead end, the driver stopped and ran from the car toward the southwest, Flecher said. A female passenger was detained at the car by an officer, while another officer, Erick Supplee, and his K-9 partner, “Zlatan,” chased after McCurdy. He was detained by Zlatan a short distance away and taken into custody.

Because Zlatan bit the suspect, Bend fire medics responded and treated McCurdy, who was taken to St. Charles-Bend for additional treatment, then to the Deschutes County Jail.

Evidence was found during the investigation indicating McCurdy was involved in heroin distribution and sales, Fletcher said, adding that sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police assisted in the case.

McCurdy was held on $32,500 bail on felony and misdemeanor attempt to elude charges, as well as reckless driving, recklessly endangering and delivery of heroin.

The incident remains under investigation and more charges are possible, Fletcher said. Anyone with information that could assist in the case was asked to contact Bend police at (541) 693-6911.

As it turns out, McCurdy was not home when the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team raided his home at 20765 Barton Crossing Way, agents said.

CODE Team detectives executed the search warrant around 6:20 p.m. Thursday, assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Team and Oregon State Police, said Sgt. Clint Burleigh.

They had been investigating heroin and methamphetamine delivery from the home, Burleigh said.

Davin Thomas Wagner, 29, and Kristine Michelle Kyner, 33, were home at the time of the raid, along with one of two children living there, Burleigh said. The other child showed up during the raid, but McCurdy wasn’t there, he said.

Evidence seized at the home included about $900 in cash, stolen property, user amounts of psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana, heroin and meth use paraphernalia, a scale, drug records and packaging material, Burleigh said.

Burleigh added that the evidence was found in areas both children living there could access it. State child welfare officials were contacted and placed the children in protective custody.

Wagner and Kyner were booked into the county jail, both facing heroin possession, manufacture and delivery charges. Wagner also was held on a parole violation warrant and for frequenting a place where drugs are used, kept or sold. Kyner also faces a first-degree child neglect charge.
