Newberry Natl. Monument facilities open

Beginning Thursday, the Deschutes National Forest’s Newberry National Volcanic Monument Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte, and Lava River Cave will be open from Thursday through Monday.

On May 2, Lava Lands Visitor Center and Lava Butte, both located 10 miles south of Bend on the west side of Highway 97, as well as Lava River Cave, located 12 miles south of Bend on the east side of Highway 97 will open from Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Beginning on June 13, the facilities will open daily. Fees are required at these sites. Recreation passes may be used as a form of payment and are available on-site for purchase.

Please note there is no accommodation for oversized vehicles when the Visitor Center is closed and entry into Lava River Cave when the facility is closed is prohibited. Visitors may access picnic sites, open trails and Lava Butte by foot or bike when the Visitor Center is not open.
