Bend man gets six years in 2 holdups, shooting

A Bend man who robbed a gas station with a gun, a restaurant with a crowbar and later shot his girlfriend in the leg during a dispute was sentenced Thursday to more than six years in prison.

On Tuesday, Anthony Joseph Pastran, 44, pleaded no contest to 11 different charges, including robbery. Two days later, Deschutes County Circuit Judge Stephen Forte handed down the sentence.

Deputy District Attorney Kandy Gies said Bend Police detectives should be applauded for helping the case come to a quick conclusion.

Back on Aug. 28, 2012, police began investigating an armed robbery at an Arco gas station at 575 NE Bellevue Drive, said Lt. Ben Gregory.

Three shots were fired by the suspect from a handgun, he said.

In that early-morning holdup, police said a masked gunman walked in, pulled a gun and demanded cash.

He fired a shot during a struggle with the employee for the gun. The worker was not hit, but suffered another injury and was treated at the hospital and released.

Nearly three months later, on Nov. 27, police were called to a robbery at the Shari’s Restaurant on North Highway 97 in Bend, Gregory said.

In that case, the robber entered the restaurant with a metal tool, removed cash from a register, then fought with a customer and employee before fleeing.

On Dec. 15, police detectives began investigating an incident at a home on NE Ross Road in which they said Anthony Joseph Pastran, 44, called 911 to say his girlfriend, Lisa Anne Schnittke, 39, was shot in the leg by a handgun she found on the porch after a knock on the door.

But police interviewed the pair and said they eventually determined he’d shot her in the leg during a struggle over the gun.

A search warrant was served at the home, Gregory said, and evidence and information from the three incidents enabled police to link the pair to the Arco and Shari’s robberies. That led to grand jury indictments of both.

During Thursday’s sentencing, Forte called Pastran’s activity “outrageous.”

“When I say outrageous, I mean I can’t understand what that Arco individual went through with the fact there’s a gun being introduced,” he said. “This gun actually went off. So everybody, that individual knew that this had the capability of killing him.”

Pastran apologized in court, acknowledging a past rap sheet with comparably minor crimes.

Forte agreed, saying that he too was surprised Pastran’s criminal activity had escalated to the armed robberies and shooting.

Later Thursday, Schnittke, also was sentenced after pleading guilty to two robbery charges.

She was given credit for more than 120 days of time already served.

She will also be required to pay back more than $2,000 in restitution to Arco and Shari’s.
