A Crescent man died at a Springfield hospital Tuesday after his pickup truck crossed the center line of Highway 58 east of Oakridge and struck a travel trailer and tanker truck, Oregon State Police said.

Troopers on Wednesday identified the victim as Peter John Brophy, 55.

The crash tied up traffic about 12 miles east of Oakridge for about five hours, troopers said.

Around 12:40 p.m., a 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven Brophy was eastbound on Highway 58 near milepost 48, troopers said.

After going through a curve, for an unknown reason, the pickup traveled across the center line into the westbound lane and struck a travel trailer pulled behind a 2007 GMC pickup driven by Brian Kraal, 58, of Springfield.

The Toyota pickup then continued into the side of a tanker truck and trailer that was following the Kraal’s pickup, troopers said.

Brophy was freed from the wreckage by firefighters from Oakridge Fire Department and flown by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, where he died late Tuesday afternoon.

Seat belt use was pending confirmation, troopers said.

Kraal, his female passenger, and the commercial truck driver, Kenneth Dooley, 53, from Eugene, were not injured. They were wearing seat belts.

OSP troopers from the Springfield and Oakridge offices responded to the scene. Senior Trooper Erich Schermerhorn is the lead investigator.

ODOT and Oakridge Fire Department assisted at the scene. Traffic updates at www.TripCheck.com.
