Bend PD K-9 nabs La Pine fugitive on the run

A 22-year-old La Pine man on Deschutes County’s “Most Wanted Fugitives” list was spotted at Gordy’s Truck Stop early Friday by a Deschutes County sheriff’s deputy, but he fled into the nearby woods. A search quickly began, and a Bend police K-9 found him hiding – injuring the man when he refused to comply, deputies said.

The deputy entered the truck stop at 17045 Whitney Road around 12:40 a.m. and saw Richard Allen Bounds, who has been wanted on a parole violation charge, said Lt. Chad Davis.

The deputy told Bounds he needed to talk to him, Davis said, but the fugitive ran. The deputy chased after Bounds until he entered the woods east of the truck stop’s convenience store and gas pumps.

More deputies were called in and set up a search perimeter, assisted by Oregon State Police and Sunriver police, the lieutenant said.

A Bend police K-9 unit also responded and began searching for Bounds, according to Davis, who said the dog apprehended Bounds about 30 feet into the wooded area.

Bounds was taken into custody and brought to St. Charles-Bend for treatment of minor injuries from the K-9, Davis said. Later, he was taken to the county jail and held without bail on the parole violation warrant. That stemmed from earlier crimes of methamphetamine possession, burglary, theft and assault.
