Bend-La Pine summer ‘Lunch and Learn’ set

The Bend-La Pine Schools Summer Meals and Summer Reading program kicks off on Friday, June 17 in the Bend area and Monday, June 24 in La Pine. The program serves hundreds of local students healthy, tasty meals each weekday at nine locations throughout Bend and La Pine.

The free lunch program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, expects to serve more than 30,000 nutritious meals to children during summer vacation.

All children, ages 18 and younger, are welcome to receive a lunch at no cost. Lunches include a sandwich or hot entree, fruit, vegetable, low fat milk, and an occasional dessert.

Parents are encouraged to attend, and may bring their own lunches, but cannot eat any of their child’s lunch. However, parents may purchase a meal of their own for $3. Registration is not needed to participate.

The summer meals program will take place at the following locations and times:

Al Moody Park
2225 NE Daggett Lane, Bend
Lunch from 11:15 am – 12:15 pm

Boys & Girls Club at the Bend-La Pine Schools Education Center
520 NW Wall, downtown Bend
Lunch from 11:45 am – 12:45 pm, snack at 3:30 pm

Finley Butte Park
Finely Butte Road and Walling Lane, La Pine
Breakfast from 9 am – 9:30 am
Lunch from noon – 1pm

Harmon Park
1100 NW Harmon, Bend
Lunch from noon – 1pm

Larkspur Park
1700 SE Reed Market Road, Bend
11:15 am – 12:15 pm

Lava Ridge Elementary School
20805 Cooley Road, Bend
Lunch from 11:30 am -12:30 pm

Orchard Park
2001 NE 6th Street, Bend
11:30 am – 12:30pm

Pilot Butte Neighborhood Park

Students are also encouraged to take part in the “Lunch and Learn” summer reading program during lunchtime at Al Moody Park, Harmon Park, Orchard Park, Pilot Butte Neighborhood Park, and at Finley Butte Park. The program will take place from June 24 through August 2, Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. ?

Lunch and Learn provides students with the opportunity to participate in a recreational summer reading program,” said Director of Federal Programs Dana Arntson. “A teacher will be available at the Lunch and Learn site to encourage and coach students as they continue to hone their reading skills during the summer months.”

Arntson adds that students can earn books and other incentives by simply reading throughout the summer and participating in the program.
