PD: Drunk man wanders into wrong Bend apartment

It was a rude awakening early Friday morning for one Bend family, as a drunk man stumbled into their apartment and later was tracked down by police. Officers say these types of crimes increase as the weather heats up, and it’s a reminder to always keep doors locked.

“I woke up at about 3:15 a.m. and there was someone standing in my bedroom,” Johnny Huyett said later.

Huyett says her 15-year-old son woke up to a man sitting on his bed. The man then went into Huyett’s bedroom.

“Wandering into someone’s house can end very badly,” said Huyette. “So I’m thankful it ended as easily as it did.”

Police say Spencer Montoya, 25, also lives at the Westside Village Apartments on 15th Street and Albany Avenue. Authorities say Montoya walked into Huyett’s unit, believing it was his own.

“I immediately bolted up, and he turned around and left my bedroom and shut the door,” Huyette said. “I flew out of bed and flew out the door after him.”

Huyett called 911, and Bend police tracked down Montoya and arrested him. Police said his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.

“I’m sure it was just an accident, but when you’re an adult, you have to be in charge of your own devices,” Huyette said.

Ironically, the terrifying night was the last Huyette and her son will be spending in the apartment complex. She says her door was unlocked because they were loading boxes in and out late into the evening.

“Lock your doors,” said Huyette. “The Westside people tend to be really friendly and leave their doors unlocked.”

Bend police say as summer approaches, more people are walking home after a late night of drinking. They see calls increase for accidental intrusions, especially on the Westside.

And while Huyette can laugh about it now, she said she’ll be locking up at her new home.

“Definitely locking the door,” she laughed. “Dead-bolting it every night.”

This isn’t the first time Hueyette has experienced a home intrusion. A few years ago, a man wandered into her Bend home during a snowstorm, and she found him asleep on her couch.

Montoya was charged with trespassing and released from the Deschutes County Jail.
