Sisters man struck walking across Hwy. 20

A 24-year-old Sisters man suffered non-life-threatening injuries Friday night when he was struck by a car while walking across Highway 20 in Sisters, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies and Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Department medics were dispatched to the crash shortly before 10 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 20 and West Hood Avenue, said Sgt. Deke DeMars.

An investigation determined a white 2002 Chevy Aveo driven by Hobart Thomas Lowe, 75, of Stanfield, Ore., had struck Jacob Nathaniel Gillan of Sisters as he crossed Highway 20 from north to south in the crosswalk near the intersection, the sergeant said.

Lowe, accompanied by Myrna Lowe, 74, also of Stanfield, was heading east at the time, and witnesses said he “was traveling at a reasonable speed,” DeMars said. The sheriff’s deputy noted that the street was “completely dark, with limited ambient light from the street lights.”

Gillan was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend with non-life-threatening injuries. A nursing supervisor said he was treated and released.

No citations have been issued, DeMars said, but the investigation is continuing. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash, he added.

Deputies were assisted by Black Butte Ranch police officers, DeMars said. The crash blocked Highway 20 for a brief period.
