More than 350 volunteers from all over Central Oregon together donated thousands of hours doing good deeds on Friday and Saturday.

It was the 17th annual United Way of Deschutes County “Days of Caring,” where local businesses completed 30 community service projects for nonprofits.

NewsChannel 21 caught the BendBroadband team in action, working on the new community garden going in along NE Eighth Street and Franklin Avenue in Bend.

About 50 employees cleared out tree debris and cut irrigation channels for the garden.

“I love the place I live at, so something to enhance it and make it better for people and the other citizens, that is awesome,” said BendBroadband employee Greg Mikkelson.

BendBroadband CEO and President Amy Tykeson said the company had its highest turnout ever for ‘Days of Caring.’

Others among the many projects included painting the Cascade Youth and Family House, sorting bottles and cans at BrightSide Animal Center in Redmond, and landscaping The Environmental Center. NewsChannel 21 also had a team contributing to Growing Tree with weed-pulling and spreading new bark mulch around the landscaping.
