Bend PD plans pedestrian safety enforcement
The City of Bend Police Department will conduct a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation on Thursday August 15, 2013, between the hours of 7:30am to 11:30am at the intersection of NW Wall Street and NW Vermont Street .
This targeted event is conducted to raise awareness of crosswalk safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
Pedestrian fatalities accounted for 20% of all crashes in Oregon in 2012. Pedestrian injury is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury-related death among children.
Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or are crossing the roadway. Motorists are also required to stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in a lane adjacent to the lane they are traveling in. Refer to Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 811.028 Failure to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian, for specifics on the law regarding drivers and ORS Chapter 814 for laws pertaining to pedestrians.
Giving pedestrians more space and slowing down in their presence can save lives. The Bend Police Department would also like to remind pedestrians that safety is everyone’s responsibility, and remember when at a crosswalk, Stop, Look, and Listen.
Funding for this PSE is made possible through a grant from Oregon Walks and Oregon Department of Transportation. For additional information, please contact Lieutenant Chris Carney at the Bend Police Department at 541-322-2978.
