Bend transient jailed in attempted rape

A witness’s call to police apparently stopped the attempted rape of a 21-year-old Bend woman at a northeast Bend homeless camp late Saturday night, and a transient was arrested on that and other charges, police said Monday.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Don Wichmann, a 69-year-old transient, called Deschutes County 911 dispatchers to report a rape in progress, said Bend police Lt. Chris Carney.

The dispatcher reported hearing a female in the background yelling, “Don’t touch me!” Carney said.

Officers arrived at the homeless camp near 1720 NE Fourth Street as the victim was pulling away from the suspect, identified as Jacob Ryan Schoenborn, 31.

Carney said an investigation found that the suspect, witness and victim had met earlier Saturday night at another transient camp, near Fourth Street and Thurston Avenue.

The three had left that camp and walked to Wichmann’s camp on Fourth Street, Carney said. After they arrived, Schoenborn is accused of forcing the victim to the ground and starting to assault her.

Wichmann told police it was obvious the contact was unwanted, as the victim yelled at Schoenborn to stop several times, Carney said.

Witchmann threatened to call police, and did so despite the assailant telling him not to, according to the lieutenant.

Schoenborn received minor facial injuries from the victim resisting the attack. Carney said the victim received minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

Schoenborn remained lodged at the county jail Monday on charges of first-degree attempted rape, first-degree sex abuse, coercion and fourth-degree assault. Bail was set at $165,000.
