Bend-area woman arrested for shot fired in air

A 63-year-old Bend woman was arrested Friday after firing a shot in the air during a family dispute over road access and water rights for a property east of town, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies responded to the 21000 block of Obsidian Avenue shortly before noon, said sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Eggert.

Initial reports indicated a woman had fired a gun at her brother-in-law, who lives in a separate house on adjoining properties.

But Eggert said their initial investigation found that an argument occurred and Rosa Olamendi used a handgun to fire a round in the air as her brother-in-law, Craig Smith, 66, began to leave the immediate area. The investigation determined the shot was not fired in Smith’s direction, and no one was injured.

The sheriff’s office learned that Olamendi and other family members have an ongoing dispute over road access and water rights for the property, Eggert said.

Olamendi was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and menacing. She later was released after posting 10 percent of her $15,000 bail, a jail officer said.

Alcohol and drugs don’t appear to be a factor in the incident, Eggert added.
