Winter weather is here, and the Deschutes National Forest wants to remind the recreating public that they may encounter seasonal closures or hazardous road conditions as they head to the forest.
While the Oregon Department of Transportation plows major highways that access the forest, the Deschutes National Forest does not plow forest roads in the winter. In addition, forest users may encounter gates that prevent wheeled vehicle travel on forest roads and are encouraged to check Motor Vehicle Use Maps for seasonal closure information.
Not all roads will be gated, and those that are blocked by snow or water should be considered impassable for public safety as well as the protection of natural resources. The public needs to be prepared at all times, whether it is a short or long journey into the forest, for snow and icy conditions on forest roads.
Recreationists are encouraged to plan routes before taking a trip to the forest, know forecasted weather and be prepared for conditions to change quickly.
