Central Oregon Community College’s Continuing Education department is offering free information sessions about the General Certificate in Brewing Exam Prep Course that will be offered during winter term.

The free session is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the COCC Chandler Lab (1027 NW Trenton Avenue).

The course is designed for brewing professionals and those with brewing knowledge who would like to study and take an internationally recognized industry exam.

The Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) General Certificate in Brewing (GCB) gives international recognition of basic knowledge and understanding in the principles of brewing operations.

This COCC course is a combination of online, self-study and weekend classroom sessions including lecture, guest speakers and learning tours.

Onsite classroom sessions will be scheduled as weekend intensives (Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), so that participants from outside Central Oregon can attend. Course dates for weekend intensives are Feb. 15-16, March 15-16, April 12-13 and May 10-11. The registration deadline is Jan. 13.

The course fee is $1,850, which includes online lessons, IBD study materials, classroom sessions and exam fee. Please note that lodging (if needed) and meals are not included in the fee.

The lead instructor for classroom sessions is Dr. Bill Pengelly, PhD, former brew master of Deschutes Brewery and recently retired sales manager for Brewers’ Supply Group.

Guest speakers and subject matter experts will reinforce online and self-study content through examples of practical application. Online learning material has been developed by an IBD-accredited instructor.

Preregistration is required for information sessions; call 541-383-7270. For information about the course, contact Nancy Jumper at 541-383-7270 or njumper@cocc.edu.
