Ducks win Red Cross Civil War Blood Drive

KTVZ

The Civil War Blood Drive between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State University Beavers has ended.

The core mission of the rivalry is to help patients in need. Blood and platelets donated that are given during the annual blood drive battle will make a big difference for the blood supply during the upcoming winter months.

The Ducks, however, will also get a well earned year’s worth of bragging rights as the 2013 winner. The campaign is now in its twelfth season, the Ducks have five wins and the Beavers have seven victories.

The score closed out at OSU Beavers, 3,782 votes and UO Ducks, 4,383 votes, which brings the total number of blood and platelet units donated to 8,165 and in the history of the campaign 84,665.

The lucky winner of the grand prize drawing for two Civil War game tickets is Joyce Kissel-Barth.

Both universities and their fans can be proud of how they represented the state of Oregon. Regardless of which direction a donor cast their ballot, each person who came in to give blood offered their help to a hospital patient in need. The need for blood is constant and it doesn’t end with this competition. The Red Cross still needs your help. The holiday season is a difficult time to bring blood and platelet donors in because of competing holiday activities, winter weather and cold and flu season.

Each of us can help spread hope this holiday season by giving something that doesn’t cost a thing, but can offer so much more. To make an appointment to give blood, please call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit us online at redcrossblood.org.
