Pet Evacuation Team offers cold-weather tips
The Pet Evacuation Team (P.E.T.) warns of dangerous sub-zero temperatures and advises how to care for outdoor animals.
Possible temperature drops to minus 25 for this weekend and beyond are a real danger to both people and animals. If you have outdoor animals, Regional P.E.T. Coordinator Jamie Kanski recommends the following steps to keep your outdoor animals warm and healthy.
1) If possible, bring outdoor cats and dogs inside until temperatures warm – a utility room, attached garage or spare bathroom works well.
2) Provide extra feed to all outdoor animals, as this increases body warmth.
3) Provide fresh, unfrozen water, which is vital in the good health of all animals.
4) Heat lamps and heated beds are good sources of warmth for your dogs, cats, fowl, and other animals.
5) A wind break or sheltered area for large animals is important in shielding them from the frigid wind chill.
Educate neighbors if possible, and report any observed animal cruelty, neglect or abandonment to local law enforcement. It can be a matter of life or death.
