C.O. police target Super Bowl Sunday DUIIs
On Super Bowl Sunday, Central Oregon law enforcement agencies are partnering to provide a one-day “high-visibility enforcement” campaign, intended to deter and remove DUII drivers from our roadways.
Super Bowl Sunday is commonly associated with alcohol and other drug consumption in a relatively short period of time., Redmond police Sgt. Curtis Chambers said Wednesday. As a result, once the game is over, many people may choose to drive while impaired, Chambers said.
“This enforcement campaign is intended to prevent potential DUII drivers from choosing to drive in the first place and to locate and arrest DUII drivers who made the wrong decision to drive after drinking or using another drug,” Chambers said in a news release.
The participating Central Oregon law enforcement agencies include: Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Crook County Sheriff’s Office, Prineville Police Department, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Redmond Police Department and the Bend Police Department.
Each of these agencies will have at least one additional officer working this enhanced enforcement campaign, and many will have two or more officers working.
“Central Oregon law enforcement wants everyone to enjoy the Super Bowl responsibly,” Chambers said. “People hosting Super Bowl parties are encouraged to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages available for guests. Host/hostesses are also encouraged to monitor alcohol/drug consumption of their guests and take steps to prevent a person from driving impaired through the use of designated drivers and taxis.”
High Visibility Enforcement campaigns are funded by grant dollars provided to participating agencies by the Oregon Department of Transportation – Traffic Safety Division.
