KPOV 88.9 High Desert Community Radio is holding its spring membership drive April 10 – 19. KPOV is the only non-profit public radio station originating from Bend, broadcasting throughout Deschutes County and the Prineville area. KPOV is supported by listeners and local businesses and powered by over 100 volunteers.

KPOV’s 70 volunteer DJs produce and play an eclectic mix of music in over 30 different music shows. Its DJs also produce and host seven home-grown talk and news shows, featuring Central Oregon guests discussing issues from local to global. To round out its variety and depth, KPOV features several nationally syndicated programs, such as Democracy Now!, that no other station broadcasts in our area.

Often overlooked in the media world is the high quality of programming featured in community radio. KPOV’s DJs work long hours to produce professional quality shows with carefully picked music or other content choices. In fact some shows that started on KPOV locally have been picked up by other stations and played around the country. KPOV’s high standards and quality programming are noticed and sometimes sought out in places beyond their home base and launching place in Central Oregon.

The goal of the membership drive is to raise $21,000 to help support KPOV programming and operations throughout 2014. Along with thank you gifts at various member donation levels, KPOV will hold a daily prize drawing during on-air pledge breaks.

Several local businesses and non-profit groups partner with KPOV and show their support for community radio by volunteering to answer phones during the drive. Supportive groups and businesses include Central Oregon PFLAG, the Environmental Center,Human Dignity Coalition, the Downtown Bend Business Association, Jobs with Justice, the Social Justice Center, the Center for Car Donations,Citizens’ Climate Lobby, the Oregon League of Conservation Voters,Spork,Commute Options, andMAMA.
