Gunshots trigger chase, manhunt. arrest N. of Bend

A quiet Tuesday afternoon at a mobile home park just north of Bend turned into anything but when a 20-year-old Redmond man reportedly rammed a car, used a Taser on a man and shot at three people, sparking a police chase, crash and manhunt that led to his capture.

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies were called out around 1:30 p.m. to the report of shots fired at the Mountain Vista Mobile Home Park at 64990 Hunnell Road, said Lt. Chad Davis.

Initial reports to police were that Jake Lynn Daniel had rammed a vehicle, illegally used a stun gun on a man and then started shooting a semi-automatic rifle at the man and another man and woman, none of whom were injured, Davis said.

One called 911 dispatchers, and a sheriff’s detective arrived in the area, at which point Daniel left in a red 1996 Ford Explorer, the lieutenant said.

The detective pursued the SUV on paved and gravel roads in the area, until Daniel returned to the same spot, drove past the mobile home park and crashed into a ditch to the south on Hunnell Road, Davis said.

Sheriff Larry Blanton said the suspect then jumped two barbed-wire fences and tried to hide in trailers at the mobile home park, where his movements were seen and reported by area residents.

The closest encounter came at one mobile home, where Ray Caloon told NewsChannel 21 he was getting ready to take a nap when he heard gunshots. And then the man — an acquaintance of his son — burst into his home.

“He comes barging in the house like he lived there — just comes running in the house, saying ‘I need to hide,’ Calhoon recalled.

“He bypassed my sister, she’s sitting in the recliner,” he said. “She goes, ‘What the hell are you doing in my house?’ And he goes right toward my bedroom. From then, it was on. I thought I was going to have to maybe get physical with him too.”

“He’s all cut up and bloody,” Calhoon said. “And I said, ‘You need to get out of my house.’ I said, ‘get out,’ and he said, ‘No, I’m not leaving. I’ve got to hide.’ And then finally I said: ‘No, you’re getting out! One way or the other, you’re leaving, come out back, we’ll talk.'”

And so he went outside, ran — and Calhoon pointed the way he fled, back north.

Blanton said, “Actually, residents helped us locate him — pointed in the direction he was running, that sort of thing. So we’re not the only ones that wanted him apprehended.”

Daniel ran north, back toward the reported shooting scene, when he was spotted by two Oregon State Police troopers and a sheriff’s deputy and taken into custody without incident, Davis said.

Calhoon called the encounter “pretty spooky. You never know what a person like that’s going to do.”

Daniel was taken to St. Charles Bend for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries from the crash, then lodged in the county jail, held without bail on a parole violation. Daniel was convicted of meth possession last April and arrested on an assault charge in January, court records showed.

He faces new charges that include second-degree attempted assault, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon, one count of unlawful use of a stun gun, three counts of menacing, attempting to elude police (felony and misdemeanor), misdemeanor failure to perform the duties of a driver and first-degree criminal mischief.
