OSP Hwy. 97 traffic stop turns up 4 lbs. of meth
An Oregon State Police traffic stop on Highway 97 south of Bend a week ago turned up about four pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the car, which led to the arrest of the driver and passenger, troopers said Friday.
A trooper stopped a 2003 Hyundai Elantra heading north on the highway about four miles south of Bend around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 4 th for a speed violation, said Lt. Gregg Hastings.
The two occupants were identified as driver Carmen D. Zavala, 32, of Madras, and passenger Davey L. Culpus, 28, of Warm Springs, Hastings said.
A subsequent investigation during the traffic stop led troopers to find about four pounds of methamphetamine concealed in the car’s trunk and rear passenger compartment, the lieutenant said. Troopers estimated the value of the seized meth at 60,000.
Zavala and Culpus were arrested on drug delivery and possession charges, troopers said Deschutes County Jail officials had no record of Zavala being booked into the jail, but Culpus posted 10 percent of his $25,000 bail and was released two days later.
