Family of 7 escapes burning Redmond home

A family of seven, including an infant, fled their burning rental home in southwest Redmond Thursday evening before firefighters stopped the blaze, which caused $30,000 damage.

Redmond Fire Marshal Traci Cooper said the fire was reported at 5:23 p.m. at 2918 Southwest Pumice Place.

Arriving crews found smoke pouring from the front door and attic and quickly extinguished the fire, confining most of the damage to the front porch and attic, though the interior sustained some smoke and water damage, she said.

The renters were home at the time, and all escaped without injury, Cooper said.

Cooper said a resident noticed the fire before the smoke alarms went off. She said they sounded later because the blaze was above them, in the attic.

An American Red Cross disaster action team responded to help the six adults and infant affected by the blaze, offering lodging, food, comfort kits and information about other services.

The fire started in the front porch area and quickly spread into the attic, Cooper said. An investigation found it likely was caused by smoking material that ignited items placed in cardboard boxes for recycling.

Damage was estimated at $25,000 to the structure and another $5,000 to the contents.

Over a dozen firefighters responded to the scene, with mutual aid assistance provided by Redmond Police and Crooked River Ranch Fire.
