Bend city councilors on Wednesday night appointed Bethany Powers Flint, J.D., to the position of municipal court judge.

A council subcommittee comprised of Jodie Barram, Mark Capell and Victor Chudowsky had previously interviewed six candidates for Municipal Judge and unanimously recommended appointing Bethany Powers Flint, to a two-year term, effective June 1.

Flint has owned Bend Family Law and Mediation, a local practice, since 2010. She was a partner in Bend Family Law from 2005 to 2011 and worked as an attorney for Babb Heatherman LLP in Bend from 2003 to 2005.

Flint earned her law degree, summa cum laude, from Whittier College School of Law in 2003, with a certificate from the college’s Center for Children’s Rights. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Irvine, magna cum laude, in English.

She has been licensed with the Oregon State Bar since 2003, and has been a member of the Oregon Mediation Association since 2010 and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts since 2011. Flint was a founding member of the AFCC-Oregon in 2013 and has been a board member for the Oregon Family Institute since 2013.

“I am honored to have been selected to serve our community on the Bend Municipal Court,” Flint said. “I look forward to consistently and fairly adjudicating the matters that come before me, as well as continuing to build communication and respect.”

The Bend City Charter allows for the council to appoint a municipal judge who holds Municipal Court for the City of Bend, Deschutes County, Oregon. The Municipal Court Judge is classified and paid as a part-time employee, not entitled to overtime pay.
