Bend DAR names essay contest winners

The Bend Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution recently announced the local winners of this year’s DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest and American History Essay Contest.

This year’s Christopher Columbus Essay Contest winner is Taite Apker, a junior at The Academy at Sisters, in Bend. She was honored at a ceremony on May 10 with a $100 prize.

Since 1996, the DAR has joined with the National Italian American Foundation to sponsor a national essay contest about Christopher Columbus. This year’s essay topic focused on how Americans view Christopher Columbus and George Washington today.

If any Bend area grade 9-12 teacher or student, public or private school, or home school student would like information regarding next year’s essay contest, contact Jill Gentry at mmegentry@gmail.com.

This year’s American History Essay Contest winners are Justice Wood, Grade 5, Bear Creek Elementary and Lucy Ferris, Grade 6, Sky View Middle School. They, too, were honored at a ceremony on May 10. Both girls received a DAR History Medal and a $50 prize.
