Small brushfire tackled near Black Butte

A small brushfire that broke out east of Black Butte was quickly tackled by crews with several agencies Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The fire was reported around 2:10 p.m. on U.S. Forest Service land off Forest Road 500, near the Zimmerman gravel pit, said Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Chief Roger Johnson.

“It sounds like they’ve got it under control,” Johnson said about 40 minutes later.

Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville estimated the size at 1.6 acres.

The U.S. Forest Service sent two engines, a hand crew and a few other personnel, while Sisters-Camp Sherman sent four units and a half-dozen firefighters and Black Butte Ranch Fire also went to assist.

A planned prescribed burn in the Glaze Meadow area beside Black Butte Ranch was postponed Wednesday due to forecast winds.
