Cross-country breast cancer ride reaches Bend
Brent Bundy is riding his bike across the country this summer on to spread awareness about breast cancer. He left Seaside on June 1st and just reached Bend,. He expects to reach Stanton Island, New York by the end of August.
He has completed this trip twice before and this year it is in honor of his friend who died of breast cancer at the age of 34. Bundy says, “I want to bring awareness that early detection saves lives.”
Wearing a bright pink shirt, Bundy rides his mountain bike between 20 and 140 miles each day and enjoys meeting people and talking about his mission.
“I’m basically an introvert by nature,” says Bundy, “and this forces me to be an extrovert.” He camps along the way and prefers campsites with electricity and showers.
He adds, “I carry a tent and sleeping bag and just need power to recharge my cell phone.”
Bundy finds that people are kind along the way and often invite him into their homes for the night.
Although Bundy did not start this trip with the intention of raising funds, people often offer donations to his cause which he passes along to Susan G. Komen’s Oregon affiliate.
Bundy is enjoying this weekend in Bend, visiting his brother, before he continues early next week.
