Bend man arrested in rural Redmond burglary

A resident west of Redmond returned home early Monday to find a suspicious man standing near the back door of his home, confronted him and soon called authorities, leading to the Bend man’s arrest on burglary, theft and other charges, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies responded to the area of SW Obsidian and Helmholtz avenues on the report of a suspicious man, later identified as David Gross, 33, of Bend, said Lt. Bryan Husband.

Husband said the resident confronted Gross, who walked away from the home, and the resident followed him from a safe distance while calling 911.

Deputies responded and contacted Gross, while other deputies went to the reporting party’s home. At the home, Husband said they found evidence indicating Gross had entered the home, where an adult son was sleeping, as well as two vehicles.

Gross was arrested and taken to the county jail in Bend, where he was booked on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree theft and unlawfully entering a motor vehicle. He remained held later Monday on $41,000 bail.

Husband said deputies had responded just before 6 p.m. Sunday to a report of a suspicious man walking in the area of O.B. Riley and Tumalo Reservoir roads. Deputies contacted Gross, but were unable to link him to any criminal activity at that time.
