Bend man dies in NE Oregon motorcycle crash

A 57-year-old Bend man was killed in a motorcycle crash discovered by a passer-by who had stopped along Highway 395 near Ukiah in northeast Oregon, Oregon State Police said.

According to OSP Sgt. Sterling Hall, shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, a citizen had stopped along the side of Highway 395 near milepost 53B when he saw a motorcycle over the edge of the roadway.

Emergency responders arriving on scene confirmed there was a man lying near the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2009 Buel motorcycle operated by Mark Hall Pfenning of Bend was heading north wnen he lost control on a left-hand curve.

The motorcycle slid on its side across the turnout on the shoulder, where it went down an embankment off the highway. The estimated time of the crash has not been confirmed.

OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are continuing the investigation. OSP was assisted at the scene by the Ukiah Quick Response Team, Pendleton Fire and Ambulance Department, LifeFlight and ODOT.
