Go Golf! benefit tournament big success

KTVZ

Aiding in its mission to help feed hungry people in Central Oregon, Newport Avenue Market hosted the second annual Go Golf! Tournament at Broken Top Golf Club on Tuesday, July 22. Successful in its objective, the event raised an astounding $50,194!

Over 150 community members and influential leaders from the grocery and retail industry hit the links for a fun-filled round of golf at Broken Top’s beautiful, championship course in Bend. An awards ceremony directly followed the tournament, where participants were able to enjoy beer, wine and small plates, while trophies were distributed and the honorary donation of proceeds raised from the event were presented to Marie Gibson and Kasey Every of the Hunger Prevention Coalition of Central Oregon.

Go Golf! has evolved into one of the largest charitable golf events in the region, having raised and donated over $296,000 to local agencies focused on hunger prevention since it became a charitable tournament in 2007. Thanks to the generosity of this year’s Go Golf! participants and sponsors, HPC and its partner agencies will benefit from this funding to provide nutritious food for the hungry in the community.

HPC was formed in 2000 by a group of localcitizensconcerned aboutthe lack of nutritious foods available through local agencies who feed those in need. This group consisted of virtually all the public and private groups involvedin addressing hunger in Central Oregon, including agencies that worked with NeighborImpactand the Oregon Food Bank. In 2002, HPC adopted bylaws and elected a Board of Directors, launching the “Help Fill Empty Plates” program to help eliminatehunger in theCentral Oregon community.Partner agencies include:

• Bethlehem Inn

• Community of Christ Church

• Family Kitchen

• Holy Trinity Care and Share

• LaPine Community Kitchen

• Oasis Soup Kitchen

• Salvation Army – Bend

• Saving Grace

• St. Vincent de Paul -Bend, Prinevilleand LaPine

• The Giving Plate

“Hats off to everyone involved in making this year’s tournament go off without a hitch. We give a heartfelt “thank you” for the generous participation of our sponsors, participants, volunteers, and the Broken Top Golf Club,” said Lauren G.R. Johnson, Newport’s Leader of the Pack (vvvrrrooom!) and COO. She especially looks forward to continuing this charity event and being able to contribute annually to non-profits that help feed the hungry in Central Oregon, because the owners of Newport Avenue Market have a family philosophy that no matter the person’s situation, everyone deserves a meal.

The platinum sponsors this year included Broken Top Club, Budweiser, Unified Grocers, Morgan Stanley-Jay Fain, Eberhard’s Dairy, United Salad, Mondelez International, Point Blank Distributing, and Newport Avenue Market.
