Bend motel drug deal turns violent; two arrests
An alleged drug buy at a northeast Bend motel turned into a robbery and assault with a metal pipe early Monday morning, leading to the arrests of two men — and a raid that turned up drugs and a suspected pipe bomb, police said.
Police were called to the Mt. Bachelor Motel at 2359 NE Division Street around 6:10 a.m. on the report of a robbery with a weapon involved, said Sgt. Dan Ritchie.
The victim, a 24-year-old Bend man, told officers he’d agreed to meet with Jeffery Edward Doty, 27, and Sergei Leonard Newlin, 22, to buy drugs, Ritchie said.
Once he entered the room, the man said he was struck with a metal pipe, and his money and pills were taken. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his face and mouth, but refused medical treatment, Ritchie said, adding that the victim and suspects were acquaintances.
Officers arrested Newlin at the motel, while Doty was arrested later by Redmond police, Ritchie said.
Police obtained a search warrant for the motel room, where they found scales, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana. Ritchie said they also found a suspected pipe bomb, which was rendered safe.
Both men were booked into the Deschutes County Jail, Doty on charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault. Bail on the charges totaled $70,000, but Doty was held without bail on a parole violation charge.
Newlin was held on $90,000 bail, accused of meth delivery and possession, criminal conspiracy, manufacture of a destructive device, heroin possession and marijuana manufacturing.
