Nature Conservancy plans Juniper Hills work party
The Nature Conservancy invites anyone interested in maintaining the Juniper Hills Preserve east of Prineville to participate in an overnight volunteer work party on the weekend of Saturday & Sunday, September 6 th – 7 th .
Juniper Hills Preserve is located east of Prineville on the Crooked River in Central Oregon and harbors ancient western junipers, an outstanding diversity of native bunchgrasses and colorful fossil formations.
Volunteers on this work party will be lopping smaller sized Juniper trees to makes way for perennial grasses and allow brush and other trees to flourish.
Volunteers will also have the option to help install posts across sections of the stream or weave in willows to encourage beaver activity and aid in stream restoration.
Participants should bring sturdy water-resistant boots for working in mucky, muddy areas by the springs, long-sleeved shirt and pants to wear while working, a daypack, rain gear, hiking boots, a hat, sunscreen, one or two large water bottles (drinking water will be available on site), insect repellent, a flashlight and leather or rubber soled work gloves if you have them—if you don’t we will have gloves you can borrow. Bring several layers of clothing to be prepared for any type of Oregon weather.
Please note: if you are coming from Portland, there will be a carpool meeting at The Nature Conservancy office located at 821 SE 14 th Avenue (between Belmont and Morrison) on Friday, September 9 th at 3:00 p.m. for departure. Prior sign-up is required.
