Oregon State Police on Wednesday identified a 53-year-old bicyclist from Canada was struck from behind by a pickup and seriously injured in a crash on Highway 126 east of Powell Butte late Tuesday afternoon, Oregon State Police reported.

They said Frederick Bouwman, 53, of Ontario, Canada, was flown to St. Charles Bend for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was listed in fair condition Thursday morning.

Bouwman was riding a KOGA MIyata bicycle heading west on the highway around 4:45 p.m. when he was struck from behind by the right-front quarter-panel and side mirror of a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Norman Chadwick, 44, of Powell Butte.

Bouwman, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown into a ditch, OSP said.

Chadwick was unhurt, troopers said, and is cooperating with the investigation.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Crook County sheriff’s deputies, area fire personnel and ODOT, troopers said.
