Prineville police Capt. Michael Boyd retires

There is another change in the ranks of the Prineville Police Department, as Capt. Michael Boyd has announced his retirement.

Boyd has spent more than a decade on the Prineville police force, including serving as the interim chief after Eric Bush was placed on paid leave last fall, then fired in July.

Last week, former Deschutes County sheriff Les Stiles was sworn in as the new interim chief.

Stiles told NewsChannel 21 on Tuesday that the department is still recovering from recent turmoil.

“There’s been a lot of pressure and stress. Being named in a lawsuit is tough. There’s a lot of things going on,” Stiles said.

Stiles said word of Boyd’s retirement came as a surprise to him, but he also said it is not that unusual, since Boyd has been an officer for 30 years.

Stiles said he is looking into filling the position, but he’s in no rush to find a permanent replacement.

Instead, Stiles said he wants the future chief to choose a captain. An interim chief is expected to be named within six to 18 months.
