Oregon Adaptive Sports hosting ‘Camp Oasis’
This week, Oregon Adaptive Sports is hosting the first of its kind, Camp Oasis, a day camp for children between the age of 6 to 13 years old with cognitive and physical disabilities.
This is a start-up camp for OAS and one that quickly filled. OAS is in its second summer season since becoming a year-round organization; prior to becoming year-round, OAS was a seasonal winter program.
The first day of camp went off without a hitch; campers arrived excitedly ready to go. The energy level was high. At the end of the day after some crafts, games and a visit to the Nature Center, campers went home wearing the popular OAS trucker hats, their personalized name tags and smiles ready for the next day.
At Camp Oasis, the young campers know they get to kick off each day with some fun activities, crafts, and partake in exciting adventures ranging from a nature walk, geocaching, canoeing, and rock climbing.
Throughout the week they will also get to meet guest visitors who are outdoor adventurers with disabilities ranging from visually impaired, profoundly deaf and an Paralympian. Together, the staff and guest visitors hope to help campers develop a greater sense of confidence and independence all while having fun.
Camp Oasis is partly funded by Disabled Sports USA, an organization that aims to provide adaptive sports opportunities for people with disabilities.
ABOUT OAS: Oregon Adaptive Sports exists to provide life-changing outdoor recreation experiences to individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities and, concurrently, to provide their families with the education and skills to enjoy these experiences together.
