Lava River Cave to close early for work
The Deschutes National Forest will be closing Lava River Cave on the Newberry National Volcanic Monument for the season on September 8.
The early closure of Lava River Cave will allow for the reconstruction of the aging and narrow stairs systems and boardwalk segments within the cave. The cave will reopen in May of 2015.
Lava River Cave is normally open through the end of September. The early closure allows for reconstruction work to be done before migrating bats will move in and hibernate in the cave for the winter.
