Two Warm Springs teens were in improving condition at a Portland hospital on Tuesday but one in Bend was in critical condition, the day after OSP says their car left Highway 26 southeast of Madras and flipped several times.

A dog was killed in the crash, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. Monday about eight miles southeast of Madras, said OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings.

A 2001 Toyota Camry driven by Rosebud Whipple, 16, was heading west near milepost 8 when it went off the road and rolled several times, coming to rest on its top, Hastings said.

The driver and passenger Annalise Whipple, 13, were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Madras, then flown to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.

A spokeswoman for the Portland hospital said the older girl was in critical condition Monday evening, but had improved to good condition Tuesday, while Annalise Whipple remained in fair condition.

A second passenger, Rhienna Wolfe, 16, was flown to St. Charles Bend, Hastings said; a hospital official said she was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon.

A dog was found dead in the car, Hastings said..

OSP crash reconstruction experts, assisted by a Bend police reconstructionist, were investigating the cause of the crash, the lieutenant said, adding that seat belt use had not been confirmed.

OSP troopers from the Bend and Madras offices were assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County EMS, Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 and ODOT.
