OSU-Cascades research funding tops $2.5 million

Oregon State University – Cascades’ research portfolio continued to expand in the fiscal year ending June 30, with more than $2.5 million in grant funding awarded, officials said Thursday.

The research grants will further work in the fields of energy research, teaching, mental health and natural resources.

Nearly a quarter of the funding was awarded to the graduate teaching program for research in teaching science, technology, engineering and math in K-12 schools, led by Mike Giamellaro, an assistant professor in math and science education.

An additional $460,000 was awarded to the graduate teaching program for the Teach Oregon Project, a partnership with local K-12 schools. Funding for Assistant Professor Chris Hagen’s research in the Energy Systems Lab totaled just over $500,000.

Faculty researchers partnered with local organizations and agencies including Deschutes County; Healing Reins, High Desert Museum; and Bend LaPine, Sisters, Crook County and Madras school districts and High Desert Education Services.

Grants were also awarded by state agencies include Oregon State Parks, Department of Human Services, and the Department of Education. Federal grants were awarded by the US Department of Energy and the US Park Service.
