Decision 2014: Wehby losing steam against Merkley

The race for U.S. Senate between Republican Monica Wehby and incumbent Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, has been a heated one and quickly garnered national attention.
Just five months ago, the race between Wehby and Merkley seemed to be a nail-biter.
Wehby’s strategy was paying off. She ran on her medical background, opposing the unpopular Affordable Care Act. Wehby is in favor of small government and pro-choice.
“Our incomes are dropping, our prices are going up, our country is much less secure,” Wehby said. “We’ve got to change that and we can but we’ve got to send different people to Washington D.C.”
But scandals overshadowed much of Wehby’s campaign. One of the super PACs financially supporting her was financed by Wehby’s ex-boyfriend, Andrew Miller.
Weeks later, reports surfaced Wehby was accused of stalking Miller and and harassing his employees.
Just last month, the website BuzzFeed reported parts of Wehby’s health care plan were copied from two other politicians.
Now, she’s trailing in the polls. In a recent New York Times/ CBS/ YouGov survey, Merkley has 51 percent of the vote while Wehby has only 39 percent.
Still Wehby remains optimistic.
“We’ve had a tremendous amount of momentum coming up right here at the last week,” Wehby said.
Meanwhile, Merkley is running on being a strong advocate for the middle class.
“I don’t believe we should give tax breaks to the richest Americans and spend a trillion dollars on that over the next 10 years,” he said.
