Input sought on Bend-La Pine Schools boundary plans

The Bend-La Pine Schools’ Boundary Review Committee invites the public to attend one of three information sessions next week to offer input on several proposals to change school enrollment areas.

The committee developed new options for elementary and middle school boundaries, which will be on display at the events.

During the open house drop-in sessions, individuals can examine the various proposals and offer feedback to members of the committee, who will be on hand.

Information sessions are set:
• Dec. 8, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Sky View Middle School
• Dec. 10, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the gym at Elk Meadow Elementary School
• Dec. 11, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the library at Pilot Butte Middle School

“This dedicated committee has worked hard to come up with boundary proposals that balance enrollment among our local schools,” said Chief Operations and Financial Officer Brad Henry. “The committee thoughtfully incorporated comments from community members when creating this first round of map proposals.”

The map proposals will also be available at Bend-La Pine Schools’ website next week and community members will be able to offer feedback on the options online (www.bend.k12.or.us/boundary2014). The committee members will take into consideration responses from the public before moving forward. A series of additional public meetings is set for mid-January. The committee is expected to make a recommendation for school enrollment changes to the superintendent by the end of February.

School enrollment areas in Bend-La Pine Schools must change for 2015-2016 school year in order to accommodate two new schools — a middle school near William E. Miller Elementary and an elementary school off Reed Market Road in southeast Bend. Eleven of 14 Bend area elementary schools are also currently at or near capacity.
