First Day hike at Smith Rock State Park Jan. 1

For the fourth year in a row, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with America’s State Parks to offer free guided First Day Hikes in state parks across Oregon on New Year’s Day .

Information about the special hike to take place at Smith Rock State Park is below. The usual $5 day-use parking fee will be waived on Jan. 1 only.

Hike time:10:00 a.m.-noon
Starting location: Welcome Center (green yurt)
Terrain and length of trail:1.5 miles, moderately difficult with about 200 feet elevation gain.

Additional details: Bring binoculars for this wildlife hike along the Crooked River that passes by a Golden Eagle nests. Suitable for age 7 and older.

Participants should dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water as well as a camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing. In case of inclement weather, call the park to find out about cancellation.

This year, OPRD is asking participants to share photos of their First Day Hike via social media by using the hashtag #ORfirstdayhikes for Twitter and Instagram or tagging “Oregon State Parks” on Facebook. Images can also be emailed to beth.wilson@oregon.
