SMART program partners with Redmond’s John Tuck
SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is pleased to announce that we are now providing the SMART Reading Program at John Tuck Elementary school in Redmond!
SMART has been providing early literacy support to children in Redmond schools since 1998. Since 2009 we have served over 500 children in Redmond and given nearly 7000 new books to SMART kids to take home and keep and read with their families.
SMART volunteers currently read with children at MA Lynch and Vern Patrick Elementary Schools and Terrebonne and Tumalo Community Schools in the Redmond area.
We are recruiting volunteers to read one hour as week to children at all Redmond SMART schools with particular focus on John Tuck and Lynch Elementary schools. SMART Volunteer Readers commit to read one-on-one for one hour each week with 2-4 children. SMART Volunteer Readers read with the same children each week in service to helping a child develop a positive relationship with a caring adult mentor.
If you are interested in reading to children in Redmond or Central Oregon schools please visit the SMART website at www.getSMARToregon.org and click the “Volunteer Now” button or call the Central Area office in Bend at 541-355-5600.
SMART in Central Oregon is supported by many local donors and grantors. If you are unable to read with children at this time please consider supporting SMART with a financial donation. It costs $35 a year to purchase books for one child to take home and keep, that’s 14 books! It costs $300 a year to fully support a child in the SMART Program. This covers the cost of giveaway books for one year and the volunteer recruitment, screening and support.

About SMART® (Start Making A Reader Today)
SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a statewide nonprofit organization that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We partner with schools around the state and engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK-3 rd grade children, helping to strengthen literacy skills and encourage a love of reading.
Over the past two decades, SMART has steadily grown to become Oregon’s largest volunteer literacy program. Children in the program receive 14 new books throughout the school year to keep and read with their families. Together, with support from communities and schools around the state, SMART is improving the reading capacity of Oregon’s children.
