Missing Bend-area man, 89, found in Gresham

An 89-year-old man with early-stage dementia left his home north of Bend in a pickup truck Thursday morning and could not be found by family, prompting authorities to join the search until he turned up Thursday night in the Gresham area.

Leopold “Leo” Scheiblehner had left his home in the 64000 block of Glacier View Drive in the Tumalo area around 8:45 a.m., said Deschutes County sheriff’s Sgt. William Bailey.

He left in a dark green 2003 Toyota Tacoma single-cab pickup, Bailey said, adding that Scheiblehner’s whereabouts were unknown.

Shortly after the sheriff’s office sent a news release to alert the public Thursday night, along with a photo of the missing man and a similar pickup truck, it sent out an update saying Scheiblehner had been found by Gresham police around 9 p.m.

“He was reported to be in good health and is being reunited with family,” Bailey wrote.

Scheiblehner was described by family members as being “outdoorsy” and had spent time in the Smith Rock and Mt. Bachelor areas, but a search of those areas had not found him or his truck.
