HSCO: 36 dogs seized in raid ready for adoption

The new year brings a new “leash on life” for 36 dogs seized in an animal neglect case near Bend last November, recently relinquished — and now ready for adoption, shelter officials said Wednesday.

The Humane Society of Central Oregon has been caring for the dogs since they were seized by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 24 from a home east of Bend. A total of 36 dogs were seized, including one that was at a clinic when sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant that evening.

“The Brittany Spaniels, Australian Terriers and Basset Hounds will become available for adoption beginning today (Wednesday),” said Karen Burns, HSCO shelter manager.

“The dogs range from outgoing to shy, and the ideal home is one familiar with sporting breed dogs, a fenced yard and has an active lifestyle,” Burns said.

As the dogs become available, they will be posted at http://www.hsco.org/dogs-puppies.

The Humane Society of Central Oregon provided critical care for the dogs for eight weeks.

HSCO has received some donations designated for the care of these dogs, but continues to have ongoing expenses. Burns says she is thankful that “HSCO was able to care for the dogs when they needed it most.”

One example: Stormy, a Brittany Spaniel, arrived emaciated, weak, filthy, and weighing only 10 pounds. Today, she is alert, romps in the grass, smiles, and weighs 30 pounds.

The range of medical care included diagnostic tests, mass removals, ear mites, lice, gastrointestinal issues, medicine, prescription diets and weight management.

Help animals when they need it most by donating to the Humane Society of Central Oregon at http://www.hsco.org/donate , the organization said.

Donations will enable the shelter to provide necessary care and medical treatments for pets in need.

Deb LaPaugh, DVM at LaPaw Animal Hospital has generously donated services to help one of the severe cases get ready for adoption, HSCO said
