Fire tears through Government Camp condos

KTVZ

Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a large fire that tore through a condominium at Government Camp near Mt. Hood.

KGW reports the fire is burning at the Golden Poles Chalet, near Highway 26.

Multiple fire agencies responded to the fire. Crews said all five full-time condo residents were accounted for, but they were unsure about people in other rental units, according to KGW reporter Kyle Iboshi, who is reporting from the scene.

Firefighters were going door-to-door in the smoke-filled building to make sure no one else is inside.

Traffic on Highway 26 did not appear to be affected by the fire response.

A woman who was nearby said she heard a loud explosion coming from the condo building and called 911.

“I was horrified to see the whole top floor of the building raging,” she said.

KGW talked with the Golden Poles’ owner, who was unable to reach any of the building’s staff by phone. He’s rushing to the scene now from his home in Portland.

The Oregon Department of Transportation was using water tanks from a nearby road project to fight the fire.
