Road to Newberry caldera set to open Friday

The road to Newberry National Volcanic Monument’s Newberry Caldera will open to motorized travel on Friday, as will other facilities, officials said.

The gate that blocks access to the caldera area of Paulina and East Lakes as well as the multitude of recreation opportunities and campgrounds in the area will open. Lava Lands Visitor Center and Lava River Cave also will open to visitors that day.

The opening is begins an exciting year of events and activities highlighting the 25 th Anniversary of the designation of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. People can stay up-to-date on featured events at http://discoveryourforest.org/events-2/ or at www.fs.fed.us/r6/webmaps/7Wonders/# .

In addition, visitors will enjoy experiencing renovations completed in 2014 at Lava River Cave, primarily improved visitor access and safety.
